Typography 1
As a class, we will design and compile a
collaborative type specimen book. The book will
be half-letter size. Each student will be responsible
for writing and designing eight sequential pages
– a cover, six spreads, and a back page – which
showcase both your typeface and your typographic
skills. We will edition, collate and bind these pages
on the last day of class, so everyone comes away
with a full book.
With this exploration, your challenge is to continue
your typeface research and design the findings –
both written and visual – in a compelling, dynamic,
and well-designed series of pages; utilizes a visual
system, a grid, and a coherent design gestalt. Details
of the infer points of typographic form, convention
and appropriateness, along with issues of visual
hierarchy, must be addressed.
The content of your pages is flexible, but should show
off your typeface in multiple situations and settings.
Additionally, space should be reserved for an essay
detailing the most compelling points of your research.
This is where you will share your point of view –
what you found to be the most intriguing aspect of
your typographer and his/her typeface.
